Patient Care Technician I - Chronic



REPORTS TO: Facility Administrator *Note: Position May Also Report To Charge Registered Nurse, Clinical Coordinator And/Or Clinical Nurse Manager

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Patient Care Technician (“PCT”) I position assists registered nurses in providing dialysis treatment for the End-Stage Renal Dialysis (“ESRD”) patient.

Note: All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in accordance with DaVita policies & procedures, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (“AAMI”), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive.
  • Receives patient into treatment/exam area; weighs patient, takes temperature and blood pressure pre- and post-dialysis; documents on all dialysis flow sheets
  • Performs and records vital signs and all other parameters of ESRD patients as per DaVita policy and/or state regulations; obtains blood samples and culture specimens and prepares for shipment
  • Collects patient data, including but not limited to:
    • monitors and documents status of vascular accesses
    • documents patient observations and seeks guidance when levels are out of normal range for ESRD patients reports patient parameters to registered nurse as needed
  • Reviews dialysis prescription, notes general physical and mental condition of patient through observation and interview, obtains information and/or data to determine compliance to dietary or medication regimen; documents observations
  • Initiates dialysis via approved accesses using proper cannulation or central venous catheter (“CVC”) techniques in accordance with state, federal, and local regulations
  • Performs clerical duties as needed which may include: filing, lab requisitions, scheduling appointments, answering phones, ordering supplies, billing, copying, faxing, data entry,maintaining patient charts
  • Set ups and monitors dialysis machines and reverses osmosis (“RO”) water system for correct functioning, responds to visual and audible alarms and makes appropriate adjustments before, during and after the dialysis treatment, performs safety checks as directed by the registered nurse
  • Dismantles, cleans, and disinfects dialysis machines and equipment in accordance to DaVita procedures; performs appropriate end of therapy terminal cleaning and disinfection of the dialysis equipment
  • If performing reuse function, know and understand all procedures related to dialyzer reuse and complete required training as applicable
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, licenses, certifications, and experience required to fulfill the essential duties, include computer skills as required.
  • High School diploma, general education development (“GED”) credential, Dialysis Technician Certification, or equivalent required
  • Dialysis Technician Certification by a CMS approved state certification program or a national commercially available certification program required within 18 months of hire or position change
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) certification required (or must be obtained within 60 days of employment)
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Word and Outlook; proficiency in all DaVita clinical applications required within 90 days of hire or position change
  • Additional state requirements/ regulations where applicable
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to perform successfully the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position
  • Ability to read, speak, and write English with clarity of expression sufficient to communicate technical and complex medical concepts to teammates, patients, and patient family members in clear and easily understandable terms required
  • Ability to understand clinical/medical vocabulary written or spoken in English required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical requirements can vary. These must be reviewed with management. However, in general, the position requires the following physical activities:
  • Ability to lift minimum of 5 pounds to a maximum of 50 pounds unassisted; able to perform repetitive standing, sitting, stooping, walking, stretching, reaching, and use full range of body motions
  • Ability to interact in person and by phone clearly and efficiently
  • Ability to use computer and all peripherals as needed to meet goals
  • Vision adequate to perform essential duties and responsibilities of position
  • Ability to pass color vision test, if applicable
WORK ENVIRONMENT
LEVEL I - Job required tasks routinely involve a potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, tissues or potential spills or splashes. Use of appropriate personal protection measures is required for every healthcare provider in these positions. Normal hazards associated with business travel, where applicable
